Sam Zimmerman: Where Intuition Meets Intention

Step inside the imaginative world of Sam Zimmerman as he pulls back the curtain on his creative process—revealing how ideas are born, evolve, and ultimately come to life. Through the lens of animals as powerful storytelling subjects, Sam will explore how narrative, symbolism, and visual language intertwine to create work that feels both personal and deeply resonant.

This session goes beyond simply how to create—it’s about why you create. Sam will share how he navigates the space between intuition and intention, trusting instinct while making deliberate artistic choices that give his work meaning and depth.

Expect a dynamic blend of insight, storytelling, and real-world creative perspective to get you out of your head and into your own creative flow. You’ll walk away not only inspired, but with tangible ways to begin translating your ideas into artwork that feels more authentic, expressive, and unmistakably your own.

About Sam

Sam Zimmerman is an Ojibwe artist whose work is deeply rooted in heritage, place, and the power of storytelling. Drawing from his experiences returning to the Grand Portage Reservation, his art reflects a profound connection to his ancestors, the land, and the living world around him. Through his paintings, Sam shares the stories of animal, bird, fish, and plant relatives—interwoven with the landscapes of Lake Superior’s North Shore—honoring the Anishinaabe tradition of passing knowledge through story.

His work carries a strong sense of purpose, embedding themes of environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and belonging. Through both studio practice and large-scale public art, Sam creates meaningful visual narratives that celebrate Ojibwe culture and language while inviting viewers to see the natural world through a more connected and respectful lens.

Sam’s public art commissions span a wide range of impactful spaces, including the Grand Portage Tribal Nation, Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, Voyageur National Park, the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, the Minnesota Twins, and communities throughout Duluth and Grand Marais. These pieces celebrate and share Ojibwe culture and language.

Sam was selected as one of 12 artists for the Minnesota Parks Artists in Residence, a statewide initiative designed to foster deeper connections between art, people, and public lands. As artist-in-residence at Tettegouche State Park from fall 2024 through fall 2025, he created work that reflects the intersection of nature, identity, and belonging.

His contributions to the arts have been recognized through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, Northland Foundation Maada’ookiing, and Duluth Superior Community Foundation.  His most recent art, a bilingual coffee table book, is a collection of paintings and stories from his first year of creating along the northern shore of Lake Superior, Following My Spirit Home, published by Blackbear and Blueberries Publishing (April 2022). Following My Spirit Home was a silver finalist for a Midwest Book Award in June 2023. His newest illustration project is a bilingual Ojibwe / English children’s book, How the Birds Got Their Songs was published by Minnesota Historical Society Press and was awarded the 2025 Heartland Booksellers Award in Picture book category. Sam continues to expand his storytelling through new work, including his upcoming bilingual art book, Walking My Ancestors Path, set for release in September 2026.
